01/Overview

Home energy made legible: solar, battery and grid in one ring, with nudges timed to the forecast.

Kelvin connects solar panels, home batteries, heat pumps and EV chargers into one view. A single ring shows today’s energy and how much of it came from the sun.

Instead of charts for their own sake, Kelvin gives one timely nudge a day: run the dryer after noon, charge the car tonight. Devices can follow the forecast automatically.

Every automation can be overridden with one tap, and Kelvin explains how much each decision saved.

In the jury’s words.

Kelvin makes energy legible. One ring and one nudge a day do more than any dashboard we reviewed.

07/Case study

From problem to proof.

The challenge

Energy apps showed kilowatt-hours nobody understood, and every device brand had its own app.

The approach

Vatn Design translated energy into two ideas — how much, and how much from the sun — and replaced dashboards with one well-timed nudge a day.

Research

  • Home visits

    22 households over two seasons

  • Comprehension tests

Energy units vs. plain framing, n=150

  • Field trial

    300 homes, 4 months

Key insights

  1. 01

People understand “72% from the sun” instantly; kWh takes explaining.

  2. 02

One nudge is acted on; five are ignored.

  3. 03

Automation is trusted when overriding it is effortless.

Outcomes

  • +18%

    Solar self-consumption

    trial households, 4 months

  • € 212

    Average yearly saving

    modelled on trial data

  • 61%

    Nudges acted on
